Smash knits: Edinburgh artists Laura Silverstone and Aila Clarke put needle to the record with brand new collab

An Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter is swapping smash hits for smash KNITS – after joining forces with a sustainable artist for her new range of merch.

Laura Silverstone, who performed with Frank Turner at the Corn Exchange in September and is a previous grand finalist on TV’s Got Talent Show in Spain, wanted something different to represent her latest single ‘Morning Pink’.

And with the freezing cold of winter hitting the UK, she teamed up with Aila Clarke – aka New Age Granny Boutique – best known for her unique range of one-off crocheted pieces including hats, dresses and racy underwear.

Together they fashioned a range of cosy limited edition scarves that chart the colours of sunrises taken from Laura’s most recent single ‘Morning Pink’ which was written beside a Lothian beach, and has racked up more than 33k plays on YouTube.

Laura said: “Aila and I met in 2021, when we were both selling our art at the crafters market in Edinburgh. I already knew then that one day I’d love her to make beautiful stuff inspired by my music, and this seemed the perfect occasion.

“She is so incredibly talented, and it was unbelievably exciting for me to be collaborating with her in developing and making a range of scarves to resemble the colours of the sunrise in Morning Pink. I think they look absolutely gorgeous.

“They are 100% sustainable too which was hugely important to me. I love them, and have even kept one for myself too, because they are so cosy which is exactly what everyone needs right now with the freezing cold.

“By buying them, people can also know that each scarf helps feed two artists and brings us much happiness to be able to share our art with them. It’s also like I get to be giving a hug to my fans every time they wear one.”

Aila set-up New Age Granny Boutique after being inundated with requests about her unique collections ranging from hand crocheted lighter cases, to balaclavas, crocheted earrings, skirts, tops and bras, which she models herself on Instagram.

She uses natural and upcycled fibres, yarns and charity wools, holds workshops to help inspire others to do their own, and is often seen selling her work in clubs and markets around Edinburgh.

Aila said: “Creating these one off pieces with Laura has been an absolute creative pleasure. I’m overjoyed I could help Laura’s vision for her new merch line come to life.”

Laura is currently recording her new album at Lipaka Studios near Cologne in Germany, with Grammy nominated producer Bob Vogston, and is releasing her next single ‘Raven On A Tree’, on 23 January.
